While digging through my old desk, I found two forgotten journals from the time I’d just moved back to California—my self-discovery era. I was hungry for answers then, writing regularly. Those pages are filled with dreams, goals, and quotes from self-help gurus that I discovered during that time.
Until then, I’d never viewed my life in separate “categories” —work, finances, health, relationships, growth. I realized each one could be shaped, and all of them contribute to my overall fulfillment. I began to see how everything was connected: a night out at the bar with too many drinks left me sluggish, eating poorly, skipping exercise—and being someone I didn’t like.
Wanting to become a better version of myself, I began setting specific goals in every area of my life—something I did each December for the year ahead. Looking back at my list from January 2016, I’m amazed by how much has actually taken shape. Not exactly as I pictured—no six-pack abs (yet) or extended trips around the world—and not always on my timeline. Some goals took years, and plenty of detours (good and bad) showed up along the way.
But looking back 10 years (a decade!!) I can say this: my life has moved in a direction I deliberately chose. I identified what was missing, set out to find it, and made choices that kept me on that path.
I haven’t reached every measurable goal from those early lists, but I’ve found something even better: a rhythm and a sense of direction. I know what matters to me now. I don’t drift through my days letting the wind decide (and yes, no more bar nights). Most areas of my life have aligned into a whole that feels true to me. I’ve become someone I like—and others seem to like better too.
I think that’s why I decided to be a coach: I proved to myself (with lots of trial and error) that deliberate choices can give us the life we think is impossible. That is also why I called my (then) podcast and now coaching practice the Quest For You. Life can be a journey to the person we want to become.
The first tool I learned in coach training was the Wheel of Life—essentially what I had already been doing on my own. The new year is approaching, and you can guess what I’ll be doing in December. If you feel a desire to change direction in one or more areas of your life – I’d love to help. My passion for growth IS why I am a coach and it lights me up to help others discover what might be possible for them.
I added some more availability for November to my Paperbell calendar – If you would like to take a more deliberate approach to your life, pick a package that works for you and let’s talk.
Warmly,
Janine
