What is important to you? What do you want to do and accomplish? That is where your focus should be.

Think more about the amazing possibilities this life offers and think less about the minor distractions that don’t really get you anywhere.

They require reflection and contemplation as it is often in that quiet time with ourselves that we get to the insights we need to move forward.

Its election week and I am less concerned about who wins, and more about what our reaction as a country will be to the incoming president. The word civility has been on my mind lately and this week is a good time to remind ourselves that we cannot afford to forget about it. Being polite may not always be easy, but its the more effective and productive way to deal with issues we don’t agree with and to treat people that are different from us.

I have been silent for a few weeks with this podcast and this episode is an attempt to explain my reasons. And while there are many potential explanations – the bottom line is this – I haven’t gotten it done. And while I am tempted to blame 2020 with all its newness and not-normalness, I have also have to be honest with myself. I had ideas, but they haven’t turned into action. This episode may resonate with many of you as I am certain we all in stuck in some areas of our life. And to get unstuck, we just need to take one small step. This episode is my first step.

We like things that are easy. We try to avoid as much pain as we can. We want to pull through and get it over with.  However, some of our biggest accomplishments in life have come from doing hard things.

I learned to smile more when I came to this country. And while I initially had to force myself to smile, I now notice all the amazing positive side effects that smiling brings.

Start every day with intention and direction

Does it seem challenging to find an inner connection with ourselves? Our world can be noisy, overwhelming and distracting.

Yet, the direction for our life comes from within us.

  • Welcome back my friends. I am honored you decided to make me and my message part of your day.
  • Did you listen to yesterday’s episode?
    • I spoke about showing up for yourself and the importance of taking action, even if your direction is not 100% clear.
    • I also encouraged you to share your goals – small or large. I want to hear what you are thinking about, what your passions and dreams are. I want to share them with the rest of the listeners so everyone can be inspired.
  • Today I want to speak about focus.
  • Focus is so critical.
  • So – listen up and focus:

 

Play some music for this:

  • We live in a broken world…
  • We live in an imperfect world
  • We live in a materially abundant but emotionally poor world
  • Despite ever-better solutions to life’s problems through technology and innovation, we still face the same issues as thousands of years ago
    • Wars
    • Poverty
    • Violence
    • Crime
    • depression
    • loneliness
    • lack of inter-personal skills such as effective conflict resolution, empathy, kindness,
    • we make bad choices because don’t have the right information, training, or role models
  • We live in a distracted world.
  • We are distracted by what this world offers.
    • we have too much information yet not enough
    • we don’t really know what information we need

 

  • In order to focus we need to know what to focus on
  • Do you know where your focus should be?

 

  • What do you want out of life right now?
  • What do you want to pass on to your children as advise?
  • What do you want to look back on when you are done here?
  • What do you want people to speak about after you are gone?

Those a big questions. Are you asking yourself these questions from time to time?

If not – now is the time.

Do you want to ….

  • Spend more quality time with your family?
  • Develop better leadership skills?
  • Work on your character and your temper?
  • Develop more patience and listening skills with others?
  • Do you want to generate more income?
  • Go to college?
  • Be better in your current job?
  • Spend more time with your friends?
  • Make new friends?

 

  • We all want something more than the default current.
  • No matter who we are and how far along we are on our path,
  • We all realize that what want more out of this life
    • That we are floating too often
    • That we are not conscious and alive when we need to
    • That we are on auto-pilot, leaving critical decisions up to others or to chance
    • That our thoughts, our reactions, and our actions are not the best they could be
    • That what we preach is not what we live by
    • That are our values are not in line with our actuality

 

  • To turn your life into one that you can call fulfilled, happy, accomplished–
  • you need to focus ON what you want and AWAY from what does not serve your purpose
  • You need to Choose between distraction and focus.

 

  • Where are your thoughts all day?
  • What do you do when you first wake up?
  • And How do you end every day?
  • How do you spend your free time?

 

  • Think about the following examples and notice how each situation is a choice you make.
  • And each choice can either bring new opportunity into your life or keep you stuck and distracted

 

  • Checking your social media feeds in the coffee line or offer a kind “How is your morning going” to the person next to you
  • Surfing the web during down time at work or taking an online course
  • Waking up and worrying, thinking about all the negative things that happened the day before or jump out of bed and exercising for a few minutes
  • Having drinks daily after work to drown the stress and the feelings that bother you or speaking openly about them with a close friend or a professional
  • Spending hours shopping for clothes you don’t really need or reconnecting with a friend who needs you

 

  • I realize these are random examples – but they are examples of we squander away valuable time
  • And don’t think I am saying we need to be alert and productive all day long
  • I realize that we need to let loose and chill out at times
  • At time – not all the time.
  • Most of the time, we let loose more than we focus.

 

  • So today … I want to leave you with this:
    • Examine how you spend your days
    • Which pockets of time are wasted? Never to return?
    • And what can you do during that time that is a priority in your life, a goal?
    • Like the one you wrote down in Episode 3?
