Doubt Your Doubt

Have you ever stopped yourself from going after something you really wanted because your brain started producing thoughts like:

“You’re not ready.”
“This probably won’t work.”
“Who do you think you are to try this?”

This familiar loop of hesitation and self-questioning plays in everyone’s brain—it’s called self-doubt.

Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern with self-doubt:

  • It shows up whenever I challenge myself with a big goal or something new.

  • It appears at various points in the process—before I even start, and then again many times along the way.

  • It feels uncomfortable and brings along fear, anxiety, and stress.

  • If I listen to it and drop my goal, I feel immediate relief—like life is back in balance.

  • If I ignore it and keep going, it lingers for a while but eventually fades—until it resurfaces at some weak point, trying once again to pull me back into my comfort zone.

Does that sound familiar?

It’s an interesting discovery because it made me realize something: self-doubt acts like a stop sign on our journey. Whether it’s launching a business, working on improving ourselves, changing careers, or committing to our health, we often interpret self-doubt as proof that something has gone wrong: we are not on the right track; it’s not achievable for us.

I believe self-doubt is simply a collection of thoughts that don’t support us or our capabilities. Our brain—specifically the part wired for survival—wants to keep us in a comfortable, familiar pattern, avoiding anything that feels uncertain or risky. It seems as if our ability to grow is only as limited as our willingness to challenge self-doubt.

Last week, I found myself in exactly this kind of holding pattern, trapped in self-doubt, convinced that everything I’m doing will never lead to anything worthwhile. And here are some truths I am working on accepting and incorporating into my life:

  • Self-doubt usually means I am stretching myself.

  • Listening to self-doubt creates inaction.

  • Accepting that the next step won’t be easy means expecting self-doubt.

  • Not allowing it to hold me back makes me stronger and builds my confidence.

The way we evolve into the best version of ourselves is through effort. And effort will feel uncomfortable. It will challenge us. But every obstacle in our life is an opportunity:
